What is a Small House?

Ducky and I have had many conversations lately about homes and space and living. These conversations have brought about the question, how much space is enough?

By many American standards I live in a small house. There is a book about small houses and many of them are over 2000 square feet. That is not a small house. My new favorite show is Small Space, Big Style. No home on it is over 1000 square feet.

Ducky and I lived in a 500 square foot apartment for four years. And we lived quite comfortably and learned to manage our space. Upon graduation we moved up to 800 square feet. Not so we could have more space, but because we were living in student housing and because we wanted a dog. And we had more space than we needed, but we got the dog. Velcro. Yeah!

When we moved to a new town, we bought the cutest little 1200 square foot house you ever did see. We loved that house. And we would have stayed in that house, except it only had one bathroom. I grew up with one bathroom and dibs on the bathroom when you got within twenty miles of home. I wanted more than one bathroom. I still love that house. And wish I could have brought the kitchen with me.

So we moved to the house we have now. We have 1750 square feet. And it still seems big. I can't imagine living in a bigger house. I might redistribute the space a bit, but I don't want more. And by American standards, we live in a small house for a family of four. But I feel like this is a large house. Plus, who wants to clean more house?

I cannot understand people who say that they need 5000 square feet per person. They exist, I've met them. They want that much space. No one needs that much space. I know many people that complain about how small their house is when it is 2500 - 3000 square feet. And I just don't get it.

Then again, I drive a Bug. With two kids. I don't supersize anything. Maybe my house feels large because it is not filled to the brim with knick knacks, collections and clutter. Been there, done that, no thanks. I guess I am not your typical American. But I love my smallish house. I'll love it more when all renovations are completed. Who knows when that will be. And when we become empty nesters, we are downsizing to less than 1000 square feet. Most likely about 800. And then we will have come full circle.

Here is a photo of sweetE's work bench. It takes up less space than those play kitchens that so many families have. And he loves it. It fits nicely in the corner.

So how big is your house? Does it seem big or small?

I'd take a 500 sq foot cottage on 10 acres before I'd take a 10,000 sq ft house on a postage stamp yard.

We're renting right now and our house is ridiculously huge. i don't know the square footage, but it's got 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. We only ever use the upstairs when we have guests.

Our house in Wheaton was about 1700 sq ft for just the two of us. It was maybe a shade too big, but close enough to Just Right. We do like to have space to get away from each other from time to time, but if you need to use mobile phones or walkie talkies inside your house to reach people who are also inside the house, the house is too big!

The home where I mostly raised the two older kids was about 1,400 square feet. Two bedrooms, two baths. I loved that house. It was perfect. Until we had the baby. Then it was a bit cramped, but really, still very liveable until he was about four or five and needed his own space.

This house is 2,650. It is big and roomy. Four bedrooms, two and a half baths. It is big enough that I have one room set up with our exercise equipment, which is so much better than the treadmill in our bedroom and the bowflex in our bathroom. It is still one room too large. We have two living areas (one is designed for dining, but I don't have a dining set, just the kitchen table). No one ever uses the furniture in that room except for the cats. Of course, if I had a dining set in there, we'd use it only to eat. There is nothing better than the boys having their own rooms, though. So many fewer fights and at 14, my older boy really needs his own space.

this is a great, great topic.

i like ann's answer and i'd say ditto except for the fact that i have a very tall husband (he is 6 foot 4) and i don't quite appreciate his need for space.

our house is about 1400 square feet. i think it's just right, though we could sure use another closet. (we have no closets on the main floor at all.) he thinks it's a bit small, but that's mainly because he has to duck his head a lot on stairs and going through doorways and in the basement.

i grew up in a house with 12 people. i'm not sure of the square footage, but we had four bedrooms and one bathroom. maybe my parents thought it was crowded (they never said) but it seemed just fine to us kids.

Ped, I think you'ld fit right in here in London-town. We live in the centre (ish) of the city and have a 524 sq ft flat with 3 beds and two baths - and are considered quite lucky...

Our house started out at 1200 sq. ft. It was fine, except we have a boy and a girl, and wanted separate bedrooms for them. We added on a bed and bath and changed the floor plan just a little, and we are now up to 1585 sq.ft. It is perfect, and clearly all I can keep up with cleaning!

When we lived in Oregon, our house was 1620 square feet and it seemed too small, but I think also the room proportions were off. Now our house is 2643sq ft and we love it. We use all of the rooms, we too have a formal dining room, but we would never use it that way, so it's our Wii room now. I grew up in a family that ended up with 9 kids and my parents house was under 1900 sq ft and one big bathroom and one powder room and that was way too small. I honestly love the size of our house and the kids are gone enough not to make the house too messy all of the time.
I found one house that I drive by often and I finally looked it up on zillow and it had 16 bedrooms!! And it is only a few miles away. What would you do with that?!

This is a subject dear to my heart. I get so cranky at magazines that have articles on what to do with "tiny" houses and then you open it and the house is 2500sf. Craziness. People used to raise big families in under 1000sf, but of course they didn't have bowling alleys in the house.

Our house is 2200sf, which is not huge. What helps us out is that we have a separate studio with approximately 1500sf. (The extra space helps because our house is like laurie's - closets are almost non-existent).

This is the biggest house we've lived in, and my husband is(seriously) wanting to sell it and buy a smaller house. He feels overwhelmed by it.

Great subject. Our house is 2120 sq ft and it seems huge compared to our houses in Europe! In England our home was half the size and our Norwegian home was not much bigger either. There were 5 of us living in it and we sold it to someone who uses it as a weekend cabin! That tells you how big it was.
We thought we'd hit the jackpot moving to the States - so much space. With teens though it's just about right and I certainly don't fancy cleaning any more bathrooms than we have right now.
Sometimes though, I look longingly at the 3 bd, 1 bth rambler behind us and think how easy that would be to zip through with a scourer!!

my house is the same size as yours! maybe a few few smaller...we moved into it from a much larger house in Staten Island and at first thought we were insane!!! But as we complete some projects and more of the space is useable, it is more and more perfect for us. We also have 2 acres for gardening, romping with our love child/fur child, and stargazing. Stumbled on your blog, now I am going to go read more!

YES! Smaller IS better! Our house is 920(I think) up and 920 down with a bath and a half. We just recently enclosed the stairwell from the upstairs to the down and that has done wonders to pull it together (before we had to go through the garage to get to downstairs and that felt just plain tacky)It seems bigger because it is only 2 bedrooms which makes for a bigger living room and kitchen/dining area. A huge garden window, deck off the dining room and a deep backyard add to the feeling of spaciousness. Like you said, who wants to clean more? And even if I had the $ I probably would not spend it on cleaning, instead I would want someone to weed the gardens. My house is definitely my castle.
