Bionic Nose

There are odor issues. And I have a very sensitive nose, a bionic nose. So for the second night the boys are sleeping in the guest room and I am drying the carpet again. And the odor of urine is still overpowering. We had the window open all day.

I need help. I need your very best urine odor banishing tips. As all my attempts seem to be making it worse.

Here is what I have done so far.
1. Shampoo carpet with pet formula shampoo.
2. Squirt "Kids and Pets" stuff on carpet (we are out of Nature's Miracle), and let it dry overnight.
3. Look in book Extraordinary Uses for Ordinary things and learn that Borax might help.
4. Get carpet wet again, sprinkle borax on it and scrub it in.
5. Sprinkle baking soda on for good measure.

Short of ripping up the carpet and painting the subfloor I am running out of ideas. And I really don't want to have to do that.

So help me. Please.

I think wet carpet just naturally smells like urine. So perhaps you should lay off with all that scrubbing. (Was that harsh?) That being said, I absolutely DETEST urine smell. Having 2 young boys who "miss" the toilet often, you can only imagine what their bathroom usually smells like. I attack it with a Lysol bleach spray cleaner. It is intended for the bathroom, but I have been known to use it on carpet, too. I know, I know... but it didn't bleach the carpet! Can you believe it? OK, aside from straight bleach, a product that I have found successful in removing urine stench is Hot Shot carpet spray cleaner. It comes in a blue bottle. Good luck!

I would have suggested Nature's Miracle. It is the best thing I've found on the planet for eliminating organic stains and odors. If I were out, I'd be at PetsMart posthaste. Actually, I'm never out. I have a nearly empty bottle and two full ones. I always think I need it, for some reason. Too bad you're so far away, I'd run one of mine right over.

This is funny. This is the second time today I've written this same thing. God, I hope it really does work.

My mom used to swear by dried lavender to get rid of dog pee smells in carpet. She would sprinkle some on and let it sit. You can even walk on it a little and grind it in with your shoe. Then she would vacuum it up.

It took away the icky smell and gave it a nice smell. At least that's the way I remember it.
